Armchair

2005

The concept of this armchair emerged as a response to the development of a strategy for the almost total use of wood scraps that are discarded daily in carpentry shops in Rio de Janeiro. When developing the project, the issue of recycling was addressed from a point of view consistent with the reality of these small carpentry shops and focus was given to rationalizing the artisanal process as a tool to maximize the reuse of wood scraps while minimizing their processing. .

For this purpose, a plywood template was developed to optimize semi-handmade production where wood scraps are supported and stacked randomly, being glued and nailed in this process. This means that the seat and back can be made in one go and quickly.

The random factor was also maintained, which was vitally important to facilitate the use of any spare size and allow for the individuality of each chair. We seek to minimize restrictions on the dimensions of the wood chips used. Due to the nature of the structure – trimmings of practically any size can be used – this strategy, in addition to allowing greater use, helped to reveal a rich texture on the back of the seat and back.

Today, each Retail Armchair produced results in a unique piece that shows the diversity of wood in Brazil and our concern with environmental awareness.
