Armchair
2011
We’ve been wanting to make some reference to the network for a long time. Perhaps the most genuine of Brazilian furniture – the hammock is originally from the indigenous people of South America and was originally made with vines and fibers. With the arrival of the Portuguese, the colonists’ women adapted the indigenous technique, starting to make cotton hammocks decorated with fringes. Now, many years after the colonization of Brazil, we propose this piece, which explores the concept of miscegenation and syncretism – the result of this colonization process itself. The exploration of this concept has been one of the keynotes of our speech when designing. Here the network meets the famous Egg Armchair, by Arne Jacobsen from 1958, to give birth to an iconographic piece.
We seek to explore the same relationships that the network has with the architectural space: The dependence on an auxiliary support structure (wall) and the lightness of being suspended from the ground…
To support the piece to the wall, a giant nail made of turned wood and metal was proposed.
To support the ceiling, a horizontal bar was proposed that supports the piece in a light and playful way – like a mobile.
