Armchair

2010

In the design of this armchair, we sought a shape that would reference marine animal life – more specifically a sea urchin.
The Armchair is made up of pieces of plywood sheet that are cut on a computer numerical control (CNC) machine. These pieces are all interconnectable and reveal a rich and complex texture that also serves as the supporting feet.
The shapes and fittings generated, apparently complex if executed by traditional carpentry, are extremely simple when made by the CNC machine and have an important function both from an aesthetic and structural point of view in this piece.
Once the cutting plan is created, the manufacturing of the parts and their assembly takes place simply and extremely quickly without the need for any manual cutting. A technique that combines the quality and complexity of artisanal carpentry work with the speed and rationality of industrial production.
