Benches and Poufs

2006

This bench is the result of several experiments with upholstered circular modules.
We used the traditional Brazilian technique of making “Fuxicos” and created our own version of giant Fuxico stuffed with foam. The base is made of wood and the fabric of the yo-yo can vary in color and have prints.
This is another example of a Lattoog project that expresses, through a contemporary style, strong references to Brazilian cultural traditions.
“Fuxico” is an artisanal sewing technique that reuses fabric scraps and was already applied in the colonial period. It consists of a small circle of fabric, with basted and gathered ends. Its precise origin is uncertain but it is attributed to African people, probably one of the first forms of what we today call material recycling.
The word “fuxico” in Portuguese is synonymous with gossip. It received this name because the women met to sew and “whisper” about other people’s lives.
