Astral

Armchair

2018

The “Astral” armchair is the latest release from Lattoog for Empório das Cadeiras and is the youngest of a family of furniture affectionately named by the Viralatas Series designers. The series brought for the first time the concept of design-fusion in which the design of two pieces of furniture, generally classic modernist, are fused (or syncretized) to result in a third design of an original piece of furniture that is completely different from the others but with a strong “genetic load” from its generating matrices. A concept invented by Lattoog in 2005 that has been a great influencer for designers in Brazil and abroad. Here we present strong but subtle references to Brazilian roots and culture: Miscegenation, syncretism and… “viralism”.

Astral was born from the fusion of the forms of the curved wood Tank armchair by the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto with the BKF armchair (also known as Butterfly) by the Argentino Austral group created in 1938. The result is a piece with a strong conceptual-cultural narrative that independent of its visual characteristics. An attribute that designers Leonardo and Pedro called “Fourth Dimension of the Object” a few years ago.
